Setting up remote support

This lets us fix things on your computer directly instead of talking you through it over the phone. Takes about five minutes, and you only ever do it once.

  1. Download RustDesk

This is the app that lets us connect. It is free and it does not run in the background collecting anything.

    Download for Mac
  2. Drag it into your Applications folder

When the download opens, drag the RustDesk icon onto the Applications folder shown next to it. Then close that window and open RustDesk from Applications.

This part matters. If you open it straight from the Downloads folder instead, some of it will not work properly later.

  3. Click Open when your Mac asks

You will see "RustDesk is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" That is normal for anything you download. Click Open.

  4. Paste the setup code we sent you

We will have texted or emailed you a long line of text. Copy it, then in RustDesk go to Settings and click Network down the left side.

Click Unlock Network Settings at the top and enter your Mac password. Then click the small paste icon in the top right of the box that appears, and click OK. That points RustDesk at our own server instead of the public one.

  5. Say yes to the permission requests

Your Mac will ask permission a few times. It has to, and it will not let us help you until you approve all three. If it opens System Settings, flip the switch next to RustDesk and come back.

    Screen RecordingAccessibilityInput Monitoring

Screen Recording lets us see your screen. Accessibility and Input Monitoring let us use your mouse and keyboard. Nothing is recorded or saved.

  6. Read us the two numbers

The RustDesk window shows an ID and a Password. Read us both and we will take it from there.

You stay in control While we are connected you will see a bar on your screen the whole time, and you can end the session whenever you want. Please do not type passwords or card numbers while we are connected. If something needs your password, tell us and we will hand the keyboard back to you.

Stuck on any of this?

Call or text and we will walk through it together. It is a five minute job, once.
